Poor House Farm Park in Martinsburg, WV preserves the American history of providing for indigent and poor children through private charity.
It was once an almshouse.
Most such almshouse farms no longer survive as public tax-payer funded government welfare took over this role in the 1960's.
But for hundreds of years before the 1960's in the United States, providing for indigent and poor children was done by the private sector.
Now it is a magnificent living history park.
The main farm building is very popular with brides as a magnificent background for weddings and wedding photos.
