Civil Defense Family Security Life Hacks

Ever since I discovered the wonder of Civil Defense at 27 in doing contract work inspecting Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs) on Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) all over the United States and teaching emergency managers for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, I have been fascinated by how critical it is to this nation's survival. (More here.)

Just before that, I practiced Civil Defense the United States Air Force without knowing it as an additional duty helping the disabled service members and veterans vacate the Eglin Air Force Base hospital during monthly hurricane exercises in the early 1980's,

(For more background, please see my bio at The American Civil Defense website where I am the volunteer Vice President https://tacda.org/about/#board.)

I believe deeply in American Civil Defense because I have been involved in it professionally and as a volunteer for 40 years.

Despite being seen as a throwback to a Cold War era with little contemporary use, civil defense is alive and well, especially among the elite who take it very seriously.

I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge I would like to share with other Americans, especially Moms, Dads, Grand Moms, Grand Dads, and small business owners.

Why them?

Well, for the last 3 years I have handed out over 5,000 civil defense business cards with contact information for how to prepare for natural and manmade disasters and parents and small business owners have been the most receptive, even grateful.

Given the high rate of heart attacks, blood clots, and other medical complications that have resulted from the medical experiments since we were attacked 3 years ago by the Communist Chinese Party bioweapon, hopefully you realize your health and survival are your responsibility.

If the Bible teaches us anything, it is to be prepared for this life…and the next.

Here, I will concentrate on being prepared for this life.

I would like to help you meet that responsibility for yourself and your family, friends, neighbors, and nation.

I will post Civil Defense Hacks to make the year more fruitful, productive, interesting, loving, disciplined, virtuous, good, holy, and beautiful.

I share my civil defense knowledge, plans, practices, and tips in the Civil Defense Hacks below.

Please join me.

CIVIL DEFENSE LIFE HACK #1: MATERIAL PREPARATION IS THE EASIEST PART OF CIVIL DEFENSE

When I was interviewed on Civil Defense Radio several years ago, I was asked what the difference was between FEMA, Preppers, and Civil Defense.

My answer was this: FEMA shows up a month after a natural and manmade disasters and writes you a check eventually...if you qualify.

Preppers, God love 'em because they are trying, concentrate too much on the materialistic and solitary, when it is through strategy, plans, friends, family, and neighbors you survive.

Civil defense, in contrast, is as old as the Bible and had survived the test of time and the prepares you to not just survive, but to triumph over natural and manmade disasters.

Material preparations for disasters is important, but it is the easiest part of the plan.

Here is a link to tested, verified, and practical items to prepare you and your family for such events.

I especially recommend purchasing WaterBricks (clean water is THE essential to survival), Waterproof USB drives (data preservation is critical to your family and business), and the Go Dark Bag (because there are tyrants with bad intent, sadly.)

CIVIL DEFENSE HACK #3: IT'S ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S FUTURE

https://poetslife.blogspot.com/2018/10/why-civil-defense-matters-for-children.html

Now a grandfather, I think in terms of generations and centuries, not just years or decades.

I am planting trees from which I will never enjoy the fruit, but I am happy to do so to benefit my progeny.

Nothing is more important for our future generations than teaching children civil defense. The rugby player is is my wee one in the photos.

He is gifted in music, engineering, athletics, and many other areas, but if he does not know how to survive, the rest does not happen.

After years of teaching him the importance of survival skills, he knows how to survive.

Many times, he now teaches me new skills.

I could leave the earth today and be confident he will survive and survive well.

Just yesterday I went over my last will and testament with him and given his reaction I am confident he is a highly skilled, intelligent, mature, loving, giving, Christian man who knows the facts of life.

In the link above to my blog post, you can discover ways you can be sure your children and grandchildren will survive...and PROSPER because they know how to survive.

CIVIL DEFENSE HACK #4: MACRO CYBERSECURITY

https://poetslife.blogspot.com/2017/10/when-state-hackers-take-aim-at-power.html

As with micro and macro economics, there is micro and macro cybersecurity.
Think of whatever you put your hands on for personal communication as micro cybersecurity.
Think of all the systems you depend on to make sure those personal computers and phones depend on as macro cybersecurity.
Here we are concerned with macro cybersecurity, or who watches the watchers.
Most Americans don't realize that right now a disciplined People's Liberation Army Lt. Colonel under the direction of a Communist Chinese Party (CCP) commissar actively owns, or is seeking, details on their DNA, emotional IQ, habits, weaknesses, and thinking.
That Lt. Colonel is working with creative Chinese criminal hackers who were given the choice of death or helping the CCP to dominate the world.
Despite the years of CCP data breaches of local, state, and federal government data centers and the exfiltration of that data to the CCP, and the parallel pirating of private sector data to CCP data servers, Americans generally are oblivious to the threat.
As proof, tens of millions of Americans freely and enthusiastically send terabytes of their personal data to the CCP via TikTok every day.
That will change soon.
Once Russia conquers the territory it wants soon, the world will change and this hidden war will become more visible.
Data breaches against the West, and especially the United States, that could have only been imagined in the past, will become reality.
I do not want this to happen, but after much research it looks like it will happen.
Civil defense is about thinking about the impossible and improbable and gaming it out just in case.
Still, it is not all bleak.
There are professionals who work 24/7/365 to countermand this CCP/Russian/North Korean/Iranian stealth digital plan to take down the American system.
I include links with a brief introduction to those government and private sector actors who are responsible for protecting our safety and security.
If you doubt me, recall that "someone" just took down our Air Traffic Control system...nationwide.
It is one more reminder of how vulnerable we are in our advanced, electricity based civilization.
I wrote https://lnkd.in/eDkHniiH in 2017.
You can also read my piece in the The American Civil Defense Association Journal of Civil Defense.
https://lnkd.in/eg88CGSi

Has anything improved since then?
Not really, so I pray every day that Americans wake up in time, aware that John F. Kennedys great book Why England Slept is now Why America Slept as we now, like England then, is mostly asleep.

CIVIL DEFENSE HACK #5: MAKE A BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN

https://poetslife.blogspot.com/2016/09/business-continuity-disaster-recovery.html

Very large insurance and other corporations have detailed business continuity plans.
Why?
To survive if a manmade or natural disaster strikes suddenly.
But small businesses need such a plan even more.
If you run a business as a plumber, HVAC, electrician, small store owner, painter, mechanic, etc., you need a business continuity plan.
I attach a link to a continuity of business plan on my civil defense blog you can use to complete to help make sure your business survives a major dislocation.
Use what is useful in this plan and disregard the rest.
One tip is that businesses now go out of business not from the flood, fire, earthquake, hurricane, riot, etc....but due to data loss.
So, back up your data...daily.
We have a simple waterproof, EMP hardened, USB drive you can purchase at the TACDA.ORG survival store.
In addition to backing up your data, these USB drives have our disaster coursework so you can learn how to deal with all the threats on the threat matrix.
The time is growing late to get started on this plan, so please start on it now.

CIVIL DEFENSE HACK #6: ALWAYS PREPARE IN ADVANCE

https://poetslife.blogspot.com/2018/10/why-civil-defense-matters-for-children.html

Consider how you prepare for a newborn baby.
Take that enthusiasm to your preparation for natural and manmade disasters.
To illustrate the point, years ago I prepared an emergency management plan for the Town of Mount Airy, MD where I lived at the time.
It was a comprehensive plan but, most importantly, it included a memorandum of understanding (MOA).
These are agreements signed in advance of an event.
They enable the rapid marshalling of the services, people, and resources needed immediately after a manmade or natural disaster strikes.
In hack #7, I will show how this memorandum of understanding, when activated after a tornado hit Mount Airy, MD, helped make the recovery faster and easier.
#people #civil #event #emergencymanagement #memorandumofunderstanding

CIVIL DEFENSE HACK #7: EF1 TORNADO LESSONS

https://poetslife.blogspot.com/2018/11/ef-1-tornado-lessons-from-mt-airy-md.html

NOTE: I use a tornado example here, but these tips apply to the whole threat matrix.

With a Memorandum of Understanding (MOA)in place with Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware, a rubble removal company, and others, the recovery from this tornado in Mount Airy, MD, because this simple task was done in advance, the town returned to operation quickly.
As with all natural disaster planning, the fundamentals must be repeated.
1.  Learn IN ADVANCE what you must do to prepare to save yourself, your family, your pets, and your neighbors when disaster strikes.
2. Stockpile, within reason, items you will need to survive ( water, food, medical, electronic, etc.).
3.  Exercise for an event.  Make if fun with children . This is vital. You will discover holes in your plan, supplies, contacts, etc. you will need to fill.
Here are natural disaster lessons explored in greater detail in the link below.
1. The Media Only Reports Part of the Story
2. Dishonest Contractors will Always Show up Post Disaster.
3. Your Insurance Only Covers Part of the Cost
4. Drones are the Future of Planning for and Recovering from Natural and Man-Made Disasters
5. Have a Damage Survey Form Template Ready
7. Good Government Governance and Communication Tools are Critical
8. Neighbors Must Help Neighbors

Merry Christmas Vets: Flowers Can Heal

Christmas Letter to my Fellow Veterans

Colonial Farm Nursery down the road from me at 9008 Tuscarora Pike, Martinsburg, WV 25403, 304 263 5232, owner Carl Ay, has remarkable poinsettias. My wife discovered this hothouse with all these beautiful poinsettias.

She kept raving about their variety and beauty. She brought me to seem these unusual flowers. Her female capacity to see beauty, as here, stuns me. And seeing the beauty of these flowers led me to write this Christmas letter to my fellow American Veterans.

Flowers can heal. I know this because my wife has taught me this over 38 years of marriage.

She brought me to this nursery to show me the beauty of the poinsettias. I was not keen to go as I thought all poinsettias were the same: red flowers and green leaves. Boring. Was I ever wrong.

Look at these flowers. Like humans, they are every color, size, weight and variety under the sun. And a human cared enough to cultivate these plants, God's gift to us on this earth, to achieve this beauty.

I did not know that until I was open to my wife's suggestion that we go look at them.

Lessons from Viewing these Poinsettias

1. My wife loves me and has my best interest at heart and I must ALWAYS listen to her as she only wants the best for me and to make me better.
2. God's beauty, as in these flowers, is all around us for our pleasure and to heal us.
3.  Trust those who love you to open your eyes to God's love through their love.

These are all vital healing lessons.
I know the Christmas season can be rough on all Veterans, even rougher than Veteran's Day or Memorial Day.

My plea in this letter is that you open your eyes to those who love you and want you around. I am tired of buying Vets who die from self inflicted wounds, be it alcohol, fentanyl, crack, heroin, or obesity.

Continue your Tradition of Service

The skills you learned when you were in the service are needed by your family, neighbors, co-workers, bosses, underlings, and your fellow Americans.

Yes, your service when you were in the service was critical, but the service you render the remainder of your time on earth is even more important.

You were just a kid when you were in the service.
Once you leave, having acquired vital skills, you must apply those skills to help your family and others.

For example, when I served in the USAF, I did extra duty in emergency management exercises helping to get patients out of the massive hospital at Eglin AFB once a month for hurricane drills.

This led to a post service job as vice president of an innovative emergency management company inspecting emergency management centers, teaching at the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, MD, and writing article for their publication Hazmat Monthly.

That let to me getting involved in emergency management exercises. and creating this civil defense blog to educate my fellow Americans about how to prepare for and overcome natural and manmade disasters for their families.

Eventually, my civil defense blog came to the attention of The American Civil Defense Association and they invited me to join their Board of Directors.
(TACDA has been educating American families about civil defense since 1962.)

I have been writing articles for their Journal of Civil Defense for 16 years, suggesting products such as WaterBricks for the Survival Store, and providing leadership, strategy, and guidance.
With my own money, I have bought thousands of business cards with TACDA's website on it and given it out to thousands over the years to spread the good word.

To honor my  MIA Uncle Frank J. Curley, on the back of the card I have a photo of him and his B-24 Braesher Crew that was shot down off HaHa Jima on February 10, 1945.

In my experience giving this card to people, 99.9% are happy to get it as everyone wants to be prepared for disasters, and to prepare their families.

Forty years ago when I left the USAF, I could not have imagined I would one day be the volunteer vice president of a civil defense charity, but I am.
The skills and knowledge I gained in the USAF from an additional duty no less, gave me the ability to keep defending, protecting, and yes, loving, my fellow Americans, and especially American Vets.

The Mystery of Beauty to Relieve Stress

What does this have to do with the beauty of poinsettias?

When I walked into the nursery, I had a mystical, spiritual revelation about the beauty of these flowers and the beauty of my wife's love bring me there.

I realized I never would have survived the past 40 years without the love of my wife and her patience educating me about the beauty of flowers.

I do cyber work. It is hard, and frankly, scary at times knowing the cyber threats this nation faces.
I do an outstanding job according to the C-Suite at my employer, but it is hard.

Normally, I write user manuals, quick start guides, checklists, blog content, and other documents typical of my role as a senior technical writer.

But, lately, I have been writing our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan. It is hard work as I have to keep many spinning plates in the air while writing the 12 documents that feed into the master plan and they all must relate to each other in  that bigger plan.

Sometimes I get too far into it, live in my head, and disconnect from the outside world. And that is where my wife and her ability to make me see the beauty of flowers comes in.

By taking a break and seeing the beauty of these flowers, and the wonder of the hand-made crafts this nursery also offers, I recover, refresh, and live to fight another day.

I encourage you to do the same.

Enjoy Christmas

Christ came to save us all. Advent is here and we prepare to celebrate His birth.

Keep Christ in your Christmas. Shop, decorate, and give gifts, yes, but mindful that it is Christ's birth and willingness to sacrifice his life for us that creates this beautiful season. Most importantly, take care of your health, mental, physical, and spiritual.

I am tired of early burials of Vets who had so much to give to their families and themselves and this nation still but are no longer with us due to poor decisions. To avoid going early, one tactic you can use to keep yourself young, spry, and intellectually challenged is to do volunteer work. Maybe join me at TACDABy helping others, you help yourself. It has done wonders for my life. And really look at the flowers.

Merry Christmas 2022 to all American Veterans!

God love you and protect you and your families!

Civil Defense - Winning Practical and Tactical Steps

Civil Defense has been around since the Old Testament.
And for good reason.
It will save your life, your family members, your neighbors, your state, and your nation.
Look it up.
Here is my Civil Defense Radio interview that provides a good introduction the field of civil defense and how it can help you and your family prepare for and respond to natural and manmade disasters.
Here, I will explore practical and tactical steps to win in Civil Defense.

Brief Definition of Civil Defense

Civil defense as used here includes all the tasks taken to ensure the safety of citizens from attack (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) as well as from the negative impacts of natural disasters.
At the very core of civil defense is the protection of children. In the United States, it is mostly done by unpaid volunteers in support of front-line emergency personnel with oversight by the government.
For background, see the Wold War Museum and the Titan Missile Museum websites.

Civil Defense History: WWII to Today

Civil defense for children has been practiced from the beginning of time, but here we will briefly analyze civil defense from the end of World War II until today. I will then offer several ways to help children with various aspects of good civil defense planning, supplies, and tactics.
From the end of World War II through the 1950’s and 1960’s, the emphasis was on training children on how to “duck and cover” or find shelter from incoming nuclear weapons.
There was also an emphasis on building shelters, often in the basement or backyard. Fallout shelters were built because nuclear war at the time were a good possibility and they were one way to reduce the loss of life should the unthinkable happen.
For the Duck and Cover film that was widely shown to children in the 1950’s and 1960’s, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWH4tWkZpPU). For fallout shelter videos, see: History Brief: For Family Fallout Shelters, see the History Brief at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLoiQ9pZjfk)
Today there are many YouTube videos mocking these videos, viewing them as laughable because the nuclear war they prepared for never happened or the shelters and supplies gathered were never going to save anyone.
I disagree.
Given the international tensions at the time and how close we came to nuclear war (I know a Marine who was in Guantanamo Bay and another who was in Florida ready to deploy during the Cuban Missile Crisis…both assure me we were one call away from a nuclear war at that time), those preparations were prudent.
Moreover, preparing to live by preparing to deal with known contingencies (civil defense) has been essential to human survival for thousands of years.
And before laughing too hard, consider that citizens then knew the threats and took measures to prepare to meet and overcome them. How many citizens can say the same today? Witness the panic buying as hurricane Florence approaches.

Physical and Health Civil Defense

Build your immune system with walking, exercise, sunshine, Vitamin D, Play and Fun. This is critical to maintaining your health to counter the effects of virus, germs, bacteria and the other ancient enemies of mankind.
Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide daily. It kills germs, bacteria and viruses. Notice your dental hygienist now makes you rinse with hydrogen peroxide before working on your teeth. They know.
Back in March of 2020, our local mayor shut down children's playgrounds and put police tape around the equipment.
When I asked him why and told him he was doing the worst thing possible, he said, "This is what Governor Hogan ordered."
When I said he could show courage and stand up to the Governor as the Governor was compromised by CCP money, he threatened me.
I know because I donated $3,000 of my personal emergency fund to supply the Mt. Airy Police and the Maryland State Troopers at the Frederick barracks with proper PPE (gloves, masks, etc.) from North America Rescue.
Meanwhile, this same Governor appeared in the news stating he was supplying Maryland first responders with PPE. False.
Result? Children who should have been building their immune system at the playground instead were isolated at home and played computer games.
As Firesign Theatre Radio taught us: "Everything you know (about the Wuhan Flu) is wrong!"
Now that this pandemic is ending, consider what was done correctly and what was done wrong. These lessons can be applied in the future.
Use goat milk soap: It will melt the fat in the fat anneals of the Wuhan Flu.
Have an EMP-Hardened thumb drive and a Whistle on your key ring: After manmade or natural disasters, most small businesses go out of business due to the destruction of their data...not the event. Keep an EMP-hardened thumb drive on your key ring. Use it to back up your data daily.
Keep a whistle on your key ring to contact others in an emergency. Purchase a few extras to protect your girlfriend, wife, daughter, niece, aunt, grand mother, etc.
Buy WaterBricks: Do not ever be in this situation: Water. Water. Water...everywhere, but not a drop to drink. Buy WaterBricks now to have plenty of clean water for you, your family and your neighbors. See here and here.
Use My Blog Posts to Learn Natural Disaster CD: If you need to learn about tornadoes, see here and here. For hurricanes, see here and here and here. For fires, see here. For snow storms, see here
Drive to a fire house if your car or truck breaks down
Fire houses have men who know engines, electrical systems, software, tools, and what you need to get your truck or car fixed fast.
Drive to a clinic or hospital if your body breaks down: Hospitals and clinics have men and women who know the mechanics of the body and healing and what you need to get your body fixed quick.
Practice Smiling: You can actually trick the brain into positive thoughts by faking a smile, kind of a variation on fake it until you make it. I kid you not. Practice smiling when at your computer, watching TV and videos, or driving.
Your body sends messages to the brain of happiness, endorphins are released, and you prevent anxiety, depression, and suicide. Vets...pay attention.
Just like a shot of botox can fool the brain into happiness, avoid anxiety, and PTSD, so too with just smiling. Try it for a week. You will be amazed at the results.
It is OK to Cry: Grieve when you have to. That includes crying to get out your physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and other pain.
God gave you a gift to relieve you of the pain...crying.
In disasters, fights, combat, and assaults I have been in, it is not unusual for the best to absorb the pain, ignore the emotions, and get the mission accomplished.
But the pain does not dissipate unless you work to make it go away.
Crying is a valuable tool to do that. Choose your time. Grieve. And you will be able to move on.

Spiritual Civil Defense

God can do for you what you cannot do for yourself: No one lasts long in Civil Defense without depending on God's help.
Basically, if you depend on your own skill stack and do not tap God's Skill Stack, you will burn out
So...Rejoice always. Pray always. Rejoice always. Pray always. Rejoice always. Pray always. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
Share your Civil Defense gifts with others: It is the Golden Rule.
You have a knowledge that saves lives and property. Share it with others.
You serve with and through others in Civil Defense as in all earthly pursuits. Loners do not last long in Civil Defense.
Practice Chivalry: Sacrifice for the women and children you love.
You survive with and through others: In manmade and natural disasters, loners go first. Do not be a loner. Reach out to others. More importantly, know who the others are who you need to survive and establish relationships with them now.
Catholics know your faith: Remember the 7 sacraments, practice them, and enjoy the grace-filled life and joy of being Christian.
Go to Mass. Receive Communion. Make a good confession. Get your children and grandchildren baptized.
And...there are sacramentals that can help you get through. Say your rosary. Wear a scapular and blessed saints medals along with the BVM medal. Listen to Father Altman. Listen to Taylor Marshall. Avoid the Marxist Jesuit pope. Keep FAITH before fear.
Depend on Jesus. The government will not save you.
FEMA will not save you. Do not be that guy in the 9th Ward in New Orleans saying, "Where's FEMA? Where's FEMA? Where's the Man!"
The Man is not coming.
Politicians and bureaucrats will not save you or your family.
You must save yourself.
This is a Civil Defense fact I have witnessed for 35 years.
Take measures to prepare yourself and your family for natural and manmade disasters NOW.
They will continue to strike as they have for thousands of years.
Chance favors the prepared.

Details will Save Your Life: When I did physical training in the United States Air Force Officer Training School in San Antonia, Texas, a young enlisted guy would lead us from a stage. Over the public address system, he would repeat over and over again, "DETAILS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!" .
Thirty five years later I have learned the truth of that saying.
Many times.
Details like wearing the proper foot gear on your feet to carry you quickly during a manmade or natural disaster.
It is essential to your safety and life.
For example, I use Keen boots and alpaca inserts to assure proper footing in any situation. Both are American made.
It is a small detail, but comfortable, sturdy, dependable boots and a soft, germ fighting insert to wick away sweat are essential to make sure I can perform at an optimal level in an emergency.
Think of other details you need to address to survive, make a list, and address those details.
Your family depends on you so prepare in advance.
"DETAILS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!"
